Scores of people were killed in a hospital fire in Kolkata, India. The latest tally as of around 9:30 ET was 89 people dead, according to msnbc.com (http://on.msnbc.com/uYt2FQ).
Six workers have been charged with culpable homicide in the deadly incident at the AMRI Hospital in Kolkata. As the fire raged, firefighters on long ladders smashed windows in the upper floors of the hospital to pull trapped patients out before they suffocated from smoke inhalation. Rescue workers took patients on stretchers and in wheelchairs to a nearby hospital.
The fire reportedly began in the building’s basement, quickly sending smoke throughout the structure. Reports indicate that at least 70 of the victims were patients, many who died from smoke inhalation.
