Severely Injured California Firefighter Ready for the Fight of His Life

Firefighter Damien Periera suffered a devastating injury when he was crushed by an oak tree while battling a wildfire earlier this month.

Periera, 25, talked to KFSN/ABC30 about his prognosis and how he’s taking inspiration from the recovery of Fresno (CA) Fire Captain Pete Dern, who recently made his first public appearance after being injured earlier this year.

“I remember the tree hitting me on the head and then crushing me down like I was nothing,” Periera told reporters. He is paralyzed from the waist down, and doctors say there’s a 50/50 chance he’ll walk again.

Two inmate firefighters were also injured battling the Tulare County fire.

According to other reports, a group called Fire Family Foundation has established a relief fund for Damien Pereira. CLICK HERE for more information.
