Dern suffered second and third-degree burns on more than half of his body, according to a KMPH report (http://bit.ly/1FdKS6c).

The report says Dern underwent surgery hours after being injured and will undergo skin grafts Wednesday.

Dern fell through the roof of a structure during a fire response, and doctors credited fellow firefighters for getting him out of the burning structure as quickly as possible, according to the report. Dern’s protective clothing enabled him to survive long enough for firefighters to rescue him.

“He is following commands and appears to be understanding what we’re telling him,” Dr. William Dominic, Director of the Leon S. Peters Burn Center, told reporters.
