Douglas “Smokey” Horton, a volunteer New York firefighter, jumped in to help a fan who was badly hurt during a late race crash that sent pieces of the car into the stands a week ago at the Daytona Motor Speedway, reports News Channel 9.
Steve Johnson, who was badly cut on the head, is out of the hospital. But, he and his wife are still in Florida recovering before heading home to Michigan.
The two men recently had a chance to speak on the phone.
“It’s a nice warm, fuzzy feeling. That’s why people are firefighters and people help people, for comfort and healing,” Horton said.
