A two-alarm fire at a Jersey City church was quickly knocked out by the fire department next door, and a 24-year-old woman is being detained for questioning in relation to the investigation into the fire, reports nj.com.
A neighbor passing by noticed a fire inside Tabernacle Temple on Orient Avenue near Ocean Avenue just after 10 a.m. this morning, Jersey City Fire Battalion Chief Bill McClintock said.
McClintock said the first floor fire is suspicious and is being investigated by the arson team.
Arson investigators later identified and detained a 24-year-old woman who they are questioning in relation to the fire, and the investigation is ongoing, Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.
McClintock could not confirm claims by some sources at the scene that someone may have been smoking inside the church at the time of the fire.
No one was injured in the fire that forced firefighters to break through three windows on the left side of the building.
