A six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ visible from I-75 in Ohio was destroyed when it was struck by lighting on June 14, 2010, reports indicate. The statue, which portrayed Jesus emerging from a lake with hands raised, was located in front of the Solid Rock Churchi in Monroe, Ohio.
According to a report on CNN.com, Monroe (OH) fire chief Mark Neu stated that the 62-foot statue had steel frame and was wrapped in Styrofoam with a fiberglass coating. The statue was hit by lightning and caught on fire, which then extended to the church’s amphitheater, heavily damaging it. The chief estimated that there was $700,000 of damage.
