Boy with Severe Medical Disorder to Be Guest of Honor at FDIC

Jordan McLinn, a five-year-old who suffers from the fatal muscle-weakening disorder known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is set to be a guest of honor at this year’s Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis.

CBS News recently reported (http://cbsn.ws/1Bojr5O) on efforts to get Jordan access to experimental drugs that are not approved by the FDA. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence recently signed the bill after it passed unanimously in the state legislature.

Earlier this year, Jordan got an opportunity to spend a day working with the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD).

According to an IFD release on that occasion, Recruit Firefighter Jordan McLinn reported for duty as instructed in his conditional offer of employment letter from IFD Chief Ernest Malone.  Accompanied by his family members, Joran arrived at IFD Station 13 promptly at 10:30 am. and reported to Captain Tim Robinson who welcomed Jordan as the 43rd member of Station 13.

Jordan’s initial activities with the IFD included receiving his own set of fire gear and showing him his assigned boot locker.  Captain Robinson told Jordan his first assignment for the day was on Ladder 13, where his training included climbing an 8 foot scuttle hole ladder to the loft, carrying an ax, and establishing positive pressure ventilation. He also practiced search and rescue, using a hoseline and water can, and even practiced EMS skills on his mom, among other activites.

Fire Engineeing Editor in Chief and FDIC Education Director Bobby Halton confirmed that Jordan will be at the upcoming FDIC, which takes place April 20-25.
