Ottawa (KS) — A 24-year-old firefighter wasn’t on the way to a grass fire about 10:15 p.m. Saturday as she drove a rural fire department vehicle on the western edge of Ottawa, siren blazing.
Authorities say Chelsea Matthew, of Ottawa, who had worked as a volunteer firefighter for more than six months, was out for a joyride in the Lincoln-Ottawa-Harrison Fire Department vehicle and was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
As she drove, Matthew used the county fire radio frequency in the vehicle to repeatedly state that she was being chased by another firefighter, according to a report from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. That claim could not be substantiated.
Matthew was pulled over by a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy in the 2300 block of South Eisenhower Road and arrested on a charge of DUI.
