On January 15, 2010, the Los Angeles County (CA) Urban Search and Rescue Team (USA-2), as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), located a total of six victims trapped in collapsed buildings in two separate locations. Using the canine search dogs, the reconnaissance teams have pinpointed the exact location of the victims and have made verbal contact.
The first incident involves three victims in a three-story multi-family dwelling along the western border of Port – au – Prince. The second incident, also with three victims, is located approximately 1 ½ blocks away and involves a four-story building that experienced a pancake collapse with 8’ slabs and concrete floors.
The 28 rescue specialists are currently engaged in the extrication process. Updates will be provided as they become available.
