Lewiston (ME) Investigates Five Fires Considered Arson

The Lewiston Fire Chief said there were five separate fires Thursday morning around the city. According to authorities, all five fires were set intentionally, reports WCSH 6.

They are all considered to be arson. The fires began between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. The fires were on Oxford Street, Nichols Street, and River Street. Two were on Howe Street.

The Lewiston Police Department said they are taking extra precaution to keep the city safe Thursday night.

Crews extinguished the Nichols Street fire around 6:15 a.m. Lewiston residents said it was an abandoned building. Forty firefighters continued to fight the three-story apartment fire on Howe Street through the morning.

A second floor resident said all three roommates were were asleep when their friend kicked in the door and told them to get out. People who lived nearby all said they were an explosion when the fire started.

All 24 residents got out safely. The Red Cross set up shelter for those the fire affected, offering water and food.
