Bellvue (OH) — An early Tuesday morning fire at a magnesium refining and recycling company forced the closing of schools for the day. Firefighters responded to the storage lot fire at MagReTech at approximately 4:45 a.m.
Four trailers loaded with scrap magnesium caught fire. However, because of magnesium’s volatility when it comes into contact with moisture, there was not much firefighters could do to extinguish the flames.
Concern about the heavy smoke generated by the fire prompted authorities to tell nearby residents to stay indoors, close their windows, and turn off all heating and air conditioning.
Officials also closed Bellevue schools for the day and had an evacuation plan in place at a nearby hospital as a precaution, in the event the smoke and fire intensified.
