Duluth, MN (AP) — A lightning strike on a Lake Superior beach killed a nine-year-old Wisconsin boy and injured seven others on Saturday.
All eight were on a sailboat that was fleeing a rapidly approaching thunderstorm at the end of Minnesota Point, near the Superior Entry to the Duluth-Superior harbor, at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Lighting struck before they could get off the boat, although one person was able to call 911.
Law enforcement and rescue agencies raced to the site, which was around two miles from the nearest road to Duluth, by boat and ATV.
The nine-year-old boy from Iron River, Wisconsin, was flown to a Duluth hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not immediately released. Four others were taken to Duluth hospitals with what authorities described as severe but not life-threatening injuries.
