September 30: Firefighter Lewis E. Anderson, 68, of the River Falls Volunteer Fire Department, Marietta, South Carolina, died three days after being struck by a tractor trailer while directing traffic at the scene of a separate motor vehicle accident.

October 4: Firefighter Jeff Thompson, 20, of Howell County Rural Fire District #1, West Plains, Missouri, was electrocuted after he and two other firefighters contacted downed power lines while battling a brush fire.

October 5: Captain William M. Bethune, 52, of the Texas City (TX) Fire Department, was killed when he was ejected through the windshield of the engine in which he was responding after it had been involved in an accident.

October 5: Firefighter Gregory Pacheco, 20, of the “Penasco Five” Indian Hand Crew, Carson National Forest, New Mexico, died of massive head injuries after being struck by a boulder while operating at the scene of an 8,000-acre forest fire.

October 7: First Assistant Chief Marvin Huisman, 55, of the Wilmont (MN) Volunteer Fire Department, died after suffering a heart attack while operating at the scene of a brush fire.

October 17: Firefighter Karen J. Savage, 44, of the Junction City (CA) Fire Department, was crushed beneath the wheels of a fire apparatus while operating at the scene of a 26,000-acre brush fire.
