A brush fire on Long Island in New York destroyed two homes and a commercial building Monday. The fire sent one firefighter to the hospital with minor burns; two others were treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters have nearly contained the brush fire on eastern Long Island, but officials told the Associated Press (http://bit.ly/HxF1N7) that high winds could make the wildland fire unpredictable.
Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone said Tuesday the fire burned heavily overnight but did not spread. Winds were expected to pick up in the early afternoon, He said, and the weather forecast called for little rain.
Bellone said firefighters were coordinating with the state’s emergency management team. Waters is expected to be dropped from the air on Tuesday.
MEANWHILE, ON STATEN ISLAND…
Firefighters got a compost fire at the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island under control. More than 200 firefighters responded to the five-alarm fire Monday.
The fire jumped a highway on the island, and heavy smoke could be seen all over Staten Island and eastern New Jersey.
Three firefighters sustained minor injuries.
