MA Firefighter Promotion Dispute Settled

Pittsfield (MA) has reached an agreement with the U.S. Justice Department over claims that it failed to promote a firefighter and Navy reservist and retaliated against him after he invoked his rights, reports The Associated Press (http://bo.st/I7rewP).

The Justice Department’s website (http://1.usa.gov/IvBv3S) details the complaint alleged that the city violated the firefighter’s rights by passing him over for promotion to lieutenant because of his military service obligations.¬†Then, after the firefighter filed his complaint, the city retaliated against him by refusing to reinstate him to the list of firefighters eligible to serve as an acting lieutenant.

The firefighter in question will retroactively be promoted to lieutenant and receive $22,000 in back pay and other earnings.
