A Beverly (MA) firefighter placed his body between a man and the flames from a car fire, according to a news report.
The Salem News (http://bit.ly/Lod2ww) reports that a man was pinned under a burning car after an accident Saturday, with flames from the cars engine coming perilously close to burning the victim.
As other firefighters rushed to hook up to a hydrant, Lieutenant Paul Rideout, a 14-year veteran of the fire department, placed his body on top of the victim’s exposed legs, becoming a virtual human shield between the man and the fire. Rideout himself was offered some protection from the fire because he was wearing personal protective equipment. For at least two minutes, Rideout lay atop the victim, grabbing the vehicle’s displaced windshield to use as an additional barrier.
Despite the efforts of Rideout and the other firefighters, the 55-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
