Emergency crews were dispatched to a home on Horseshoe Drive at 5:47 p.m. in connection with a fire complaint and found that the residence was burning, according to Lt. Ryan Bessette of the Waterbury Police Department.
Police responded along with crews from the Waterbury Fire Department. Bessette said a 56-year-old man was removed from the home by first responders and taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital. He was initially listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Around 3:30 a.m., the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, Bessette said. His identity has not been released.
According to Bessette, a preliminary investigation found that an “unknown explosion” occurred inside the residence which led to the fire. The cause of the explosion and fire is being investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies.
Bessette said members of the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit were expected to conduct a controlled detonation at the home on Monday morning. He said the situation posed no danger to the surrounding area.
