An asylum seeker from Ivory Coast set himself on fire at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci airport, reports The Associated Press.
His actions alarmed bystanders until police doused the flames and rushed the young man to the hospital, officials said.
The Italian Council for Refugees, a non-governmental organization known as CIR that works with refugees, said the 19-year-old man, set himself on fire in a bid to avoid deportation.
On Wednesday evening, he had arrived at the airport on a flight from the Netherlands, which had sent him back to Rome, said CIR director Christopher Hein.
