Several Arkansas fire departments responded to a fire at the historic Fort Chaffee hospital late Wednesday night. Firefighters from Fort Smith, Barling, White Bluff and Fort Chaffee arrived at approximately 10:30 p.m. to confront the massive fire. Four buildings were fully involved and at least two have burned to the ground, according to reports from
KFSM
and
KHBS
Residents told KFSM (todaysthv.com) that huge flames and smoke filling the sky could be seen from their homes.
Reports quoted Fort Smith Fire Chief Mike Richards to say ”it was too dangerous for fightfighters to try and put the fire out so they’re letting the buildings burn to the ground.”
The report continued, “The buildings are made of all wood and other combustibles, lots of grass between them,” says Richards. “And they’re very close in proximity. With all the dry conditions, the heat they were just prime to burn very quickly.”
