A large fire has broken out at a Carteret apartment building Friday afternoon, borough officials said.

Building 4 of the Bristol Station Complex in Carteret caught fire sometime on Friday afternoon, the borough said in a statement. The building is a total loss, officials said.

Seventy-five people lived in the 48 units. There are minor, non-life threatening injuries, but fire suppression remains ongoing, officials said.

It’s unclear what sparked the fire, but it spread quickly, officials said. Within minutes of firefighters arriving at the building, the fire broke through the ceiling, fire Chief Mark Hruska told NJ Advance Media.

There are no fire sprinklers in the ceiling level, but there are in individual apartments, he said, based on building codes at the time.

Videos taken by NBC4 in New York show a partial collapse of the roof, which Hruska said was a continuous roof across the entirety of the building.

“It is expected that emergency activity will continue in the area for some time as they fight to extinguish the fire and secure the building,” the town said in a statement.

Firefighters from nearby towns have been called in to assist, and residents are asked to avoid the area for the time being.
