Massive Multi-Day Fire Breaks out at New Jersey Junkyard

A massive fire broke out Dec. 28 at the Sar’s Auto Wreckers’ yard on Schoolhouse Road in the Milton section of Jefferson Township at around 7 p.m. Saturday evening, reports The Bergen Record.

In a press release issued late Monday morning Captain Eric Wilsusen of the Jefferson Police Department said that the fire was brought under control around 8 a.m. Sunday but firefighters spent most of the day attempting to extinguish a large pile of tires.

“Fire operations were reduced at around 6 p.m. Sunday,” he said. “At approximately 9 p.m. the tires re-ignited and tankers from surrounding towns had to be called back to the scene. Fire operations were finally completed at approximately 3 a.m. Monday morning.”

He said that about 50 percent of the vehicles stored on property were extensively damaged. Wilsusen also noted that the cause of the fire is under investigation in the Monday press release.
