Mayday, Albany (NY) Firefighter Caught in Flashover

A firefighter was caught in a flashover and a Mayday was declared during a structure fire Wednesday in Albany, New York

According to a report from Sidewinder Photography, the city of Albany Fire Department was dispatched on June 21, 2023, to 347 2nd Ave. for a reported structure fire. On arrival, firefighters had a heavy smoke condition pushing from the building. Firefighters made entry to the structure and began to conduct a primary search. Conditions inside of the building rapidly deteriorated and one firefighter transmitted the Mayday after being caught in a flashover.

Differentiating the “Fireground Phenomena”

The firefighter was able to exit the building and was checked out on scene. Firefighters evacuated the structure and set up defensive operations temporarily. After knocking down the large bulk of the fire, firefighters made entry again and knocked down the remaining fire. The fire is actively under investigation at this time.

According to Sidewinder Photography, Chief Gregory of the Albany Fire Department indicated that two firefighters were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, along with one civilian with a non-fire related medical issue. They have since been treated and released.
