Four firefighters were injured Wednesday after a fire in Delaware that prompted a Mayday call.
According to a release from the Elsmere Fire Company, Elsmere firefighters and mutual aid units responded at 17:03 hours on October 23, 2024, to a residential structure fire in the 100 block of S. Colonial Ave. in the Colonial Heights neighborhood. First-arriving units reported smoke showing from the front of the structure.
While crews were operating on scene, the fire rapidly intensified, and a Mayday was declared when firefighters became unaccounted for. Within a few minutes, all firefighters were able to escape the structure, and the members who declared the Mayday were then accounted for.
As a result, four firefighters sustained injuries and were treated on scene by EMS units and then transported to the local hospital for further treatment and released shortly afier. According to 6 Action News, one firefighter sustained serious burns to his face.
An investigation is currently underway, the release said.
