Firefighters pulled an elderly man out of a Michigan house fire where crews encountered hoarding conditions, but the victim subsequently passed away.
Fire photographer Ian Kushnir provided several photos from the September 2 fire on Detroit Street in Dearborn.
Crews arrived on scene and immediately started rescue operations and fire suppression, according to Kushnir. Firefighters had to contend with heavy smoke, heat, and hoarding conditions. The battalion chief for Dearborn (MI) Fire Department called for a second alarm. The resident was rescued from the back bedroom of the home and transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he eventually passed away.
A Mayday was declared on the fireground for firefighters who had run out of air during the rescue. According to CBS News, one of the members had to exit through a window, while another had to be assisted out of the home by other firefighters. Neither firefighter was injured.
