McAllen (TX) Fire Department cited for student project

The McAllen (TX) Fire Department has been awarded the Betty Scharff Memorial Award, recognizing the department as a Champion for Children. Scharff was a co-developer of the HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) reading and math programs.

McAllen firefighters have helped in all five HOSTS Language Arts Centers for six years. In its award announcement, HOSTS noted the two roles of the McAllen firefighters: to “extinguish fires and prevent them from occurring” and to “help extinguish illiteracy and help to prevent failure from occurring.”
