Fire photographer Ian Kushnir recently forwarded a few photos from the scene of a huge natural gas explosion in Melvindale, Michigan.
According to Kushnir’s site, the blast occurred July 2 at the DTE energy facility. Crews dispatched to a car fire arrived on scene and called for another engine and chief. Firefighters found that a gas main had been hit and started to evacuate the apartments across the street. The explosion caused a massive fireball, and fire burned multiple buildings and cars in the DTE facility.
The fire was reportedly caused by a driver who went off the road and onto the property.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the blast could be felt as far away as Canada and a total of 1,500 residents were temporarily displaced.
