A four-foot granite monument was unveiled to honor the six Boston (MA) firefighters killed in a 1942 restaurant fire.
The Boston Globe reports (http://b.globe.com/XcHZju) that the monument at Maverick Square will pay tribute to fire department members who died during the Luongo Restaurant fire 70 years ago today.
Forty-five other people–mostly firefighters–were injured in the incident. The firefighters who died were John F. Foley, Edward F. Macomber, Peter F. McMorrow, Francis J. Degan, Daniel E. McGuire, and Malachi F. Reddington. The firefighters were on the second floor of the structure when they were killed in a collapse.

The incident gripped Boston until it was overshadowed by 13 days later by the the Cocoanut Grove Nightclub fire that killed 492 people. The nightclub fire eventually led to sweeping fire code changes.
