Memorial Sunday in ’79

Memorial Sunday in ’79

Sometimes when you are late enough, you become early for the next show, and that’s what happened to Congress when it designated October 7, 1979, as Fire Fighters Memorial Sunday. Final action on the joint resolution in the Senate came on October 4—a little late for meaningful October 8 of this year as Memorial Sunday.

The idea of selecting the Sunday of Fire Prevention Week as Fire Fighters Memorial Sunday to honor fire fighters who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty was conceived by the Rev. Ed Stauffer, chaplain of the Fort Worth, Texas, Fire Department. When the House considered the resolution on September 29, it was a little late for observing Memorial Sunday this year, so the resolution was amended to apply to 1979 and the Senate concurred, apparently feeling that it is never too late to be early.
