
The City of Memphis Fire Services Division is seeking an experienced and dedicated Fire Communications Manager to oversee the operations of our Fire Services Communications Center. This leadership role is responsible for managing emergency dispatch services, ensuring efficient data collection, and implementing state-of-the-art communication technologies to enhance public safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the Fire Communications Center, managing personnel, dispatch operations, and data collection.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to dispatch systems, ensuring the latest technology is utilized.
- Provide leadership, training, and performance evaluations for assigned staff, including direct supervision of supervisors.
- Develop and monitor the service center budget, ensuring proper staffing, materials, and equipment availability.
- Maintain fire management zones (FMZ) to support pre-incident planning, hydrant flushing, and smoke detector installations.
- Oversee the coordination and maintenance of all phone lines and communication systems in collaboration with the Information Systems (IS) Division.
- Stay updated on regulatory changes, emergency communication advancements, and industry best practices through continued education and training.
- Be available 24/7 on-call for emergency situations.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in an emergency communications center.
- At least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role (e.g., Watch Commander, Mid-Level Manager, or higher).
- Technical Expertise:
- In-depth knowledge of Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) Systems and Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocols.
- Strong familiarity with Standard Operating Procedures in emergency communication services.
- Other Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license (must be maintained as a condition of employment).
Work Environment & Expectations
- Primarily an office-based role, with travel required to fire stations and city locations as needed.
- Potential exposure to dust, smoke, fumes, and various weather conditions.
- Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with staff, officials, and external agencies.
- Requires proficiency with office and emergency communication equipment.
