A bill signed earlier this week by Michigan’s governor would apparently end a ban on full-time firefighters working for other departments on their days off.
According to MLive.com (http://bit.ly/1F5xJfX), the law began as a reaction by lawmakers when the city of Grand Rapids began prohibiting its firefighters from two-hatting. The city had said it doesn’t want to train firefighters and have them work elsewhere, and doesn’t it want city firefighters putting themselves at risk fighting fires in other communities.
The state House passed the bill late last year and the Michigan Senate passed it earlier this month. It was signed into law by Governor Rick Synder on October 15.
