Michigan Home Depots Fires Set to Hide Thefts

Police are looking into a fire they believe was set intentionally at a Saginaw County Home Depot store, possibly to cause a distraction in order to steal power tools, reports mlive.com

Saginaw Sheriff William Federspiel said the fire could be related to a fire the day before at a Home Depot location in Genesee County.

The Thursday, Oct. 29, fire at Home Depot at 3132 Bueker Drive, in the area of Bay and Tittabawassee, is suspicious and “possibly an arson,” Federspiel said.

“We believe a fire was started in the insulation aisle as an attempt for someone to steal power tools from this store,” he said.

Police are investigating whether the fire is related to a blaze Wednesday at a Flint Township Home Depot, where police believe two men started a fire and left with power tools, Federspiel said.

“We have something very similar to the fire that happened at the other Home Depot yesterday,” he said.

Genesee County authorities could not be reached immediately for comment.

Federspiel said it was “very disturbing” that someone might have set a fire at a business while it was open to customers.
