SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee wildlife officials say a 15-year-old girl drowned while kayaking with her parents on the Duck River in Bedford County.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said the family from Manchester was kayaking on the river below Normandy Dam on Sunday when the girl’s vessel capsized.

The girl was swept into a downed tree and was pinned underwater.

“The couple attempted to free their daughter, but swift currents prevented any rescue,” the agency said in a news release.

The girl’s name was not immediately released.

Bedford County is located in Middle Tennessee, south of Nashville.
