An apartment fire early Saturday in Milwaukie killed one person, and injured four others, including three who were transported to area hospitals, reports oregonlive.com.
Clackamas County fire officials said crews were dispatched to Lake Crest Apartments, located at 8106 S.E. Lake Road, about 12:30 a.m. after receiving multiple phone calls about a fire in one of the complex’s nine buildings. Lt. Jed Wachlin, a spokesman for Clackamas County Fire District No. 1, said when crews arrived, heavy smoke was coming from a first floor unit.
The building only has two outside doors. With thick smoke in the hallway, many residents in the other 31 units in the wood, two-story structure were trapped in their homes, Wachlin said.
“There was a large amount of smoke throughout the building,” Wachlin said. “We ended up rescuing a lot of people out of windows from ladders on the outside.”
Many people, who were asleep, had to be jostled awake, Wachlin said.
The one person who died lived in the unit where the fire started, he said. Another person in the same unit was transported to a local hospital. Two people in an adjoining apartment also had to be taken to the hospital and a third was treated at the scene, Wachlin said.
No identities have yet been released.
Crews snuffed the two-alarm fire within about 30 minutes. Wachlin said the fire damaged the unit in which it started and caused minor smoke damage to units on either side and above.
