Two Minneapolis (MN) firefighters spoke recently with a local television station about a close call they had while responding to a fire in a vacant, boarded-up home last November.
John Chelstrom and Darick Rhodes discussed their experiences at the incident that nearly claimed their lives with KARE 11. A person had gotten inside the vacant home and, in an effort to stay warm, started a fire.
While Rhodes attacked the fire, Chelstrom and other firefighters’ attempted to rescue the victim. The floor of the burning home gave way, and Rhodes and Chelstrom fell through into the basement.
The firefighters suffered burns and bruises but managed to walk away alive. The fire victim later succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital.
