Mobile Firefighters Offer Tips After Fireplace Fire Spread to Home

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department (AL) is sharing some tips after a fire in a fireplace spread to an attic and caused $20,000 in damage, reports

The fire had initially been started in the fireplace for warmth, but investigators determined it spread because there was a small gap between the fireplace and the interior wall.

The following tips include:

  • Be sure [your fireplace] is installed properly.
  • Have the chimney inspected annually and cleaned if necessary, especially if it has not been used for some time.
  • Do not use flammable liquids to start or accelerate any fire.
  • Keep glass or [a] metal screen in front of the fireplace opening to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out, unwanted material from going in and help prevent the possibility of burns to occupants.
