Fire swept through a prison in the Central American country of Honduras, killing more than 270 inmates.
The body count is almost certain to increase. A CBS news report (http://bit.ly/yxOSOf ) indicated officials said more than 350 inmates were unaccounted for after the horrific Tuesday night fire in Comayuga, 90 miles north of the Honduras capital, Tegucigalpa.
Comayagua fire department spokesman Josue Garcia told reporters about prisoners’ desperate attempts to escape the flames. Firefighters were hindered from helping them because they didn’t have keys and reportedly could not find jailers who did.
Officials are investigating whether the fire was triggered by rioting prisoners or by an electrical short-circuit.
