The city has terminated the last Cleveland firefighter to plead guilty in the department’s shift-trading scandal, and will administratively charge 19 supervisors, reports Cleveland.com
Calvin Robinson, considered the most brazen of the 13 firefighters accused of illegally paying coworkers to work his shifts, was fired after an administrative hearing late last month. He had been on the force for 23 years.
Prosecutors said Robinson missed nearly 8,500 hours of work – about 3 1/2 years worth – while he worked part-time as a substitute teacher in Cleveland schools, assistant football coach at Glenville High School and operated a daycare business.
In the discipline letter telling Robinson of his firing, Safety Director Michael McGrath called Robinson’s violations “incomprehensible.”
“The egregious manner in which you violated the trust of your fellow firefighters shows a complete lack of integrity,” McGrath said. “The citizens of the city of Cleveland expect and deserve a full and complete effort from all of us. You failed in every way.”
After a series of internal reviews and audits led to criminal charges against the firefighters in May 2013, the city Wednesday said 19 supervisors will now face administrative charges.
