Several San Antonio firefighters had a close call battling a three-alarm hotel fire when the roof collapsed on top of them.
Kens 5 San Antonio (http://bit.ly/HXOzm3) reports that hotel guest watched as the firefighters struggled to get out from under the debris. They were able to escape and none of the 100 firefighters on scene or the 80 motel occupants were injured.
The fire started at around 4:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Studio 6 Extended Stay and quickly spread through most of the building. A fire chief told WOAI 4 San Antonio (http://bit.ly/IchYp6) that he wasn’t sure whether the building had firewalls but that winds in excess of 25 mph meant that they wouldn’t have mattered.
Firefighters had to take a defensive tactical position. The building was destroyed.
