The International Association of Fire Chiefs elected and installed new officers during the lAFC’s annual convention in St. Louis during July. Warren Isman, chief of the Fairfax County (Va.) Fire and Rescue Department, replaces Robert Ely as president. Ron Coleman, chief of the Fullerton (Calif.) Fire Department, becomes first vice president, and Jim Estepp, chief of the Prince George’s County (Md.) Fire Department becomes second vice president.
Harry Shaw, director of Operation Life Safety, was presented the Samuel Quentzel Distinguished Service Award at the New York Fire Sprinkler Contractor’s Association 14th annual awards ceremony in June. The award was for outstanding performance in the development and promotion of fire protection sprinkler technology.
Shaw, a resident of Montgomery County, Md., played a major role in persuading Montgomery County and other communities throughout the United States to adopt residential fire sprinkler legislation.
Shaw managed and directed the initial development of a new, quick-response residential sprinkler system. It has already helped save approximately 20 lives in actual fire situations.
Operation Life Safety is a consortium of the U.S. Fire Administration, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the private sector.
Fred K. Walker, Jr., has been named senior fire protection engineer at U.S. Air Force headquarters in Washington, D.C. He will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Air Force’s worldwide fire protection program, which includes 13,000 firefighters, 3,500 vehicles, and 153 major installations.
Walker joined the Air Force in 1978 and served nine years on active duty, holding positions in operations and maintenance, combat operations plans, fire protection research, and fire protection engineering. He’s still active in the Air Force reserve as a captain.
Before joining the Air Force, Walker was a firefighter with the Chesterfield Fire Department in Virgina and served as a training instructor at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute. He has a bachelor of science degree in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland.
Seven students in Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute’s master’s degree program in fire protection engineering have been inducted into the Salamander Honorary Fire Protection Society. The society, at the Illinois Institute of Technology, promotes scholarship and original investigation in fire protection engineering.
Members are chosen on the basis of academic excellence and leadership qualities. The recent inductees are Hamid Bahadori, Douglas Beller, Douglas Blanchard, Mansour Alipour, Casey Grant, Wayne D. Moore, and Philip D. Sherman.
