Joe Fishelson Honored

J. E. Fishelson, founder and president of Red Head Brass, Inc., was named honorary chief of the Mayville, Wis., Fire Department, at a banquet in his honor on May 3. He was presented with a chiefs cap, an honorary chief’s badge and a plaque by Chief Roy Billington (left in photo) “in appreciation for his dedication to the fire service.”

Fishelson was the son of a Mayville grocer and earned his way through the University of Wisconsin law school by candling eggs.

In accepting the honor, he announced that the Mayville Fire Department will receive a $2500 foundation scholarship to be awarded to a student or students of the department’s choice.

S. C. Fire Academy Head

Joseph McDonagh has been named director of the South Carolina Fire Academy. He comes from the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute at the University of Maryland where he was senior instructor for the Upper Eastern Shore regional office. While there, he developed the first intensive breathing apparatus training program.

The fire academy, created in 1969, was sponsored by the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education and the South Carolina State Firemen’s Association. Last year, the General Assembly designated TCE as the agency for fire training. The academy is located at the Airport Campus of Midlands Technical College in Columbia.

Leizear Retires

Frank L. Leizear retired as Chief of the Bethesda, Md. Fire Department on July 1, ending 30 years of service.

He joined the department as a private in July 1950 and was named chief on July 1, 1976.

He is presently the vice chairman of the Montgomery County Fire Board, delegate to the Metropolitan Council of Governments Regional Council of Fire Chiefs, and vice president of the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association.

Man Arrested After KS Fire That Killed Two

A man was arrested on Monday in connection with a deadly Hutchinson house fire on Saturday where a woman and girl died.
