Craig Shelley, chief of the Rutland (VT) Fire Department, has retired to accept a position as fire protection advisor with Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia, a position that requires a thorough knowledge of fire service operations, training, standards and regulations. A veteran of the fire service for more than 30 years, he served 26 years with the Fire Department of New York (NY) and retired as the chief of marine operations in 1997.

Arold Wolgamott, assistant chief of the Gonzales (CA) Volunteer Fire Deparment, and Andrea Walter, president of the Sterling Park (VA) Rescue Squad, are the winners of the 2000 VFIS-sponsored IAFC Volunteer and Combination Officers Section Executive Fire Officer Program Scholarship. The scholarships are funded up to $500 a year for each year of EFP participation.

Chief Dennis Comptonof the Mesa (AZ) Fire Department received the 2000 Fire Person of the Year Award from the American Fire Sprinkler Association. A 30-year veteran of the fire service, Compton recenlty completed a two-year process that culminated in the passage of an ordinance in Mesa expanding the installation of automatic fire sprinklers in new commmercial and residential buildings. The law requires homebuilders to offer homebuyers residential sprinkler systems and educational information on how the systems work and why they should be installed.
