The National Hurricane Conference has selected the CITY OF CORAL GABLES, Florida, for its 1993 Emergency Management Award, which is given to “a city, county, regional, or state agency for outstanding progress and accomplishment in the fields of hurricane preparedness, planning, and research.” Coral Gables’ is the first municipal government to receive the award. The Awards Selection Committee issued a statement saying it was impressed by the City’s Basic Emergency Operations Plan and Emergency Operations Team, and the fact that the City “provided for the welfare of the families of its employees during … Hurricane Andrew … |so that] city employees could go about their response missions without worrying about the welfare and safety of their families.”

■ Firefighter FRANK DOCIMO. one of the foremost hazardous materials response trainers in the county and Hazardous Materials Coordinator for the Turn of the River (CD Fire Department, in April was chosen by the International Society of Fire Service Instructors as “Instructor of the Year.” Last year, Docimo received the equivalent state award from the Connecticut Fire Department Instructors Association.

DAVID R. BLOSSOM, a supervisor in the Loss Prevention Department of Riscorp in Orlando. Florida, has been designated an Associate in Loss Control Management (ALCM) by the Insurance Institute of America, after successhilly completing five examinations testing knowledge of accident prevention, property protection, occupational health and hygiene, and two of the following: principles of risk management and insurance, insurance company operations, and/or management. Blossom is a certified fire protection specialist and a certified fire inspector.

■ At the Orange County (CA) Fire Department’s annual Fire Service Recognition Day, the following fire service personnel and civilians were recognized for their promotion of community fire safety awareness. From Battalion 2, Engineer/Paramedic JOSE VALBUENA and Captain ROBERT WILSON were honored, and from Battalion 3, Firefighter LARRY BLACK. Engineer ALAN M. LITZ: and civilians CRAIG MCKENNON. JOHN MCKINNON, JR., and MIKE SANTONI were noted. The following individuals were honored from Battalion 4 (Trabuco Canyon, Laguna Hills, Lake Forest, and Mission Viejo): Firefighter/Paramedic WILLIAM LOCKHART. Captain JERRY CROOPNICK. and civilian JOE SAMET; from Battalion 5. the following were honored: Firefighter JIM OWEN; Captain JIM CASS: and civilian JIM ANDERSON From Battalion 6, Firefighter STEVE (ONCIALDI, Captain CARLOS CAMARENA and civilians BRENDA B. SATZ and JOANN M. MARTIN were recognized.
