CONGRESSMAN STENY HOYER (D-MD) has been named as the new co-chairman of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus for the 102nd Congress. He is chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, the policymaking body for House Democrats, and has been involved in much emergency personnel legislation.

“We are certainly excited to have Steny Hoyer involved in the Caucus leadership,” says Congressman Curt Weldon (R-PA), founder and chairman of the Caucus. “He is an outstanding legislator who has been a friend of the fire service for many years.”

The Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association. George Washington’s original firecompany, hits announced the recipients of its four fire service education scholarships. They are: Lf. JOHN A. JONAS of the City of New York Fire Department: JOHN H. MOREHEAD, JR., a firefighter with the Alexandria (VA) Fire Department; DAVID KEVIN WHITING, a heavy-rescue specialist with the Columbus (OH) Fire Department; and DlEDRE A. WOOD, a fire prevention specialist with the Rancho Sante Fe (CA) Fire Department. Each receives S500 toward their education.

Yvorra Leadership Development, Inc. (YU)) has announced the recipients of this year’s YLD scholarship awards, which are given to outstanding leaders in the fire and emergency services to promote leadership development. They are: LANCE DENNO. district chief of the Syracuse (NY) Fire Department; GARY E. PEDIGO, battalion chief of the Westminster (CO) Fire Department; and VICTORIA CHAMES. firefighter with the Alameda County (CA) Office of Emergency Services Fire Department. Each year, awards in the amount of S1.000 are presented in memory of Jim Yvorra, a firefighter who was killed in the line of duty in 1988.
