Nation’s Firefighters Donate $15 Million to 2001 MDA Telethon

LOS ANGELES – At this year’s Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) telethon, International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) President Harold Schaitberger presented checks totaling more than $15 million. Members of IAFF firefighter locals collected the money, which represents the firefighters’ largest contribution since they began their partnership with the MDA 48 years ago. They have raised more than $160 million throughout those years.

Firefighters conducting their traditional “Fill-the-Boot” campaign for MDA are a familiar site on street corners across the nation as Labor Day approaches. IAFF members also participate in MDA summer camps and conduct a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year to raise funds for MDA, which they have supported for almost 50 years.
