NE Captain Calls for Mayday at Three-Alarm Recycling Plant Fire

According to a report from KETV, a captain with the Omaha (NE) Fire Department (OFD) is doing well after calling a Mayday after he was separated from a hoseline while responding to a fire at the Firstar Fiber recycling plant Wednesday night.

The OFD said the Mayday was called during the three-alarm response at 103rd and I Streets.

OFD Assistant Fire Marshal Joe Caniglia said the department received the call for the incident at 10:25 p.m. OFD crews called a second alarm at 10:44 p.m. and then a third alarm at 11:03 p.m. They received the Mayday call at 11:44 p.m. after firefighters became separated.

Caniglia also said it took approximately four minutes to locate the captain after he called the Mayday. Crews quickly located the down captain and assisted him out of the building to be evaluated by waiting medics.

The paper inside the plant increased the difficultly OFD crews faced to fully extinguish the flames. As of 7 a.m. the fire was still burning inside the facility.
