New Mexico Organization Helps Terminal Ill Kids Learn About Firefighting

Fire Kids is a New Mexico based organization founded in 2013 by firefighter Kipp Rix. The mission of the organization shall be to work with municipal agencies and other organizations to identify children who are facing a life altering or terminal illness who have a wish to experience the life of a fire fighter. Working with local officials and the fire department Fire Kids will schedule with the fire department and its crews a day where the sponsored child will be integrated into the on-duty crew. The goal of Fire Kids will be to work with the fire crews to ensure that the sponsored child is afforded every opportunity to experience the life of a fire fighter by interacting with the crews in daily tasks, trainings and meals. Though each child’s sponsorship day will vary, a typical day will consist of the child being issued his/ her uniform to include fire department shirt, badge and cap. The child will help with morning vehicle checkout, various station duties and running calls as permitted. Child will help prepare and share lunch with their crew. After lunch the child will attend fire training where they will learn basic hose work, fire safety and have the opportunity to ride in any specialized equipment such as ladder truck, rescue truck or ARFF truck. After training crews will return to the station and finish any station duties while Fire House Cuisine prepares the dinner for the child, crew and special guests. During dinner the child will be presented with a letter from the Mayor or Fire Chief declaring the child an Honorary Member of the fire department. At all times the sponsored child will remain under the supervision of the Fire Kids sponsor and a designated fire crew member, at no time will the sponsored child be placed in harm’s way.

Fire Kids will receive its funding from public donations, grants and from the activities of Fire House Publications and Fire House Cuisine via the sales of Fire House Cook Books, an annual BBQ Cook Off, Chili Cook Off and the “Dinner for Two” raffles. Based in New Mexico Fire Kids will strive to expand in a controlled manner to open “Fire Kids Fire Departments” in other areas. Future goals will include becoming active with organizations to include; Make A Wish Foundation, IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters), Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation and other civic organizations. Working with the various organizations will afford Fire Kids the best opportunity to recognize and sponsor all the children possible.
