Five people died Friday when flames in a vacant Newark (NJ) house leapt to the home next door, fire officials told The Newark Star-Ledger.
A man, a teenager and a 6-year-old girl died in their apartment in the early morning blaze, a fire director said. In a heart-wrenching twist, their deaths came on the same day the children’s mother was in a nearby hospital giving birth.
In another apartment, a couple escaped with two children, but two others, a 3-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, died.
“It’s a tragic day for the families and the city of Newark,” Fire Chief John Centanni said.
