NIOSH Report Critiques IL Department After LODD

A report by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on the death of a rookie Homewood (IL) firefighter during a structure fire concluded that the department was ill-equipped to handle a fire of that magnitude, according to a report form the Chicago Tribune.

A investigation into the March 30, 2010 incident that killed Brian Carey, 28, stated that the department used “ineffective” fire control methods, failed to recognize deteriorating fire conditions at the incident, and was short-staffed and not equipped to handle a fire of that size.
