North Carolina Firefighters Battle Smoke and Fire at Tobacco Barn Fire

Shorty after 12 :15 pm on Aug 21, 2014, fire departments from Edgecombe County, Rocky Mount City, and Nash County in North Carolina were dispatched to 2000 Block of Leggett Road just outside the city limits for a large group of tobacco shed barns that were on fire.

Fire companies from West Edgecombe, Heartsease, Battleboro Community, Rocky Mount City Engine 5, and Edgecombe County Rescue Squad responded.

First-arriving firefighters found two large tobacco sheds barns fully involved in fire. It took over one hour to bring the blaze under control.

The temperature was in the mid 90s. Edgecombe Rescue supplied rehab to the 30 firefighters on the scene.

The barns were full of tobacco being dried and cured loaded on large metal racks that had to be removed one by one to extinguish. No one was injured in the fire but the barns will need to be rebuilt.

Firefighters remained on scene for some time for overhaul operations, The exact cause of the fire is unknown but is not suspicious, officials stated.
