North Hudson (NJ) Regional Deputy Chief Anthony Avillo, a longtime Fire Engineering contributor and board member, has retired from the job after 30 years. Ron Jeffers shared photos from Avillo’s last day, including a retirement lunch at Squad 1’s quarters where companies from throughout the North Hudson Regional district took turns stopping by to wish him well.

Avillo started the job on the former Weehawken (NJ) Fire Department, which, along with Union City, North Bergen, West New York, and Guttenberg, merged in 1999 to form North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue.

Anthony Avillo was assigned as 1st Platoon regional tour commander. He has a B.S. in fire science from New Jersey City University and is an instructor at the Bergen County (N.J.) and Monmouth County (N.J.) Fire Academies. Avillo is a member of the FDIC advisory board and the Fire Engineering editorial advisory board. He is the author of Fireground Strategies, 2nd edition (Pennwell, 2008) and Fireground Strategies Workbook Volume II (Pennwell, 2009). He is a contributing author to Fire Engineering‘s Handbook for Firefighter I and II (2009) and co-author of the Fire Engineering Firefighters Handbook Study Guide (Pennwell, 2009).
